Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.2.0: Dawn of the Hunt Brings Major Changes

Grinding Gear Games has rolled out Patch 0.2.0 for Path of Exile 2, introducing the Dawn of the Hunt league along with significant gameplay changes. This update introduces the new Huntress class, fresh Ascendancies, major endgame content, and a sweeping set of balance adjustments—many of which nerf the most dominant builds from the game’s first season.

The early access launch of Path of Exile 2 has been a massive success, expanding on the franchise’s reputation as one of the best action RPGs like Diablo. With this latest patch, the developers take another step toward the full 1.0 release, which will eventually make PoE 2 a free-to-play title on Steam.

Major Gameplay Adjustments

The Dawn of the Hunt expansion adds a range of new mechanics, but the biggest impact will be felt in balance changes affecting nearly every aspect of the game:

  • Increased Vulnerability to Ailments: Players are now more susceptible to freeze and shock, while freezing enemies will take longer to build up.

  • Stun Rework: Heavy stun duration has tripled, and stunned characters can no longer block or evade, making it a severe threat in combat.

  • Charge Duration Nerfs: Endurance, Frenzy, and Power Charges now last only 15 seconds instead of 20, making them harder to maintain.

  • Radius of Presence Reduced: Buffs affecting "allies in your presence" now have a smaller range, but their area is now visually displayed.

Passive Tree and Skill Nerfs

  • Jewel Sockets Removed: Twelve jewel slots have been eliminated from the passive skill tree. Players can reclaim previously equipped jewels using the command.

  • Eldritch Battery Rework: This popular keystone now doubles mana costs, reducing its effectiveness.

  • Falcon Technique, Master Fletching, and Spaghettification Nerfed: These once-powerful passive nodes have been significantly weakened.

Skill Nerfs Targeting Popular Builds

  • Archmage Hit Hard: One of the most powerful damage boosters in the game has been severely weakened.

  • Spark Loses Projectiles: A favorite skill for map clearing now generates fewer projectiles, reducing its effectiveness.

  • Flame Wall Downgraded: Previously a top-tier support skill, its ability to boost projectile damage has been diminished.

  • Minion Builds Weakened: Minions now scale worse at higher levels, making them less viable in the late game. Summon Raging Spirits has been hit particularly hard, with fewer spirits spawned per cast.

  • Decompose Damage Lowered: The Corpsewade unique boots, infamous for the “fart build,” now deal significantly less damage.

Small Wins Amid the Nerfs

Despite the sweeping balance reductions, some buffs and quality-of-life improvements have been implemented:

  • Mana Costs Reduced: Attacks, marks, and warcries now cost less mana, which should ease resource management for some builds.

  • Skill Damage Rebalanced: Many skills have received adjustments to their base damage and scaling, though the specifics haven’t been detailed.

Is This Good or Bad for Players?

While these changes will force many players to rethink their builds, they could ultimately improve game balance. Previously, high-end players dominated the endgame with overpowered setups, while newcomers struggled to progress. By leveling the playing field, Dawn of the Hunt may provide a more rewarding experience for all players.
