Next Class May Already Be Clear In POE 2

Path of Exile 2 is missing content like weapon types, skills, and classes, but plans to release six more classes in the future.
Class selection impacts gameplay due to Ascendancies, base attributes, starting weapons, and skills.
The next class introduced in Path of Exile 2 is likely to be either Druid or Templar, enhancing existing gameplay options.

It has been over two months since Path of Exile 2 first came out in early access, and while there is a lot of content packed into the game already, a lot of features are missing for the time being. Not only are six weapon types out of twelve missing alongside their respective skills, but several skills from existing weapon types are not out yet. The same applies to classes, with Path of Exile 2's six classes being only half of what the game will entail further down the line. GGG plans to release six more classes and their accompanying Ascendancies, and it may be clear which ones will be prioritized.

There are many benefits to choosing one class over another, and most of the time that has a lot to do with Ascendancies. While there are glaring exceptions, like how Path of Exile 2's Blood Mage may be bad early on due to its Life costs for using abilities, most Ascendancies provide a massive boost to a character's power. Base classes matter because they dictate which Ascendancy one will be using, but also because of their base Attributes, starting weapon and skills, and starting point on the skill tree. As it stands, there is one archetype that is missing from the starting six classes, and it's likely it will be added first.

Predicting POE 2's Next Class

Path of Exile 2's classes differ from PoE 1's in various ways. For example, it's worth noting that the original game features seven classes and three Ascendancies per class instead of two, with the Scion only having one. Each class is also built to have a unique combination of Attributes, whereas in the sequel each Attribute combination is used twice. Currently, these combinations are used:

Sorceress, pure Intelligence
Warrior, pure Strength
Ranger, pure Dexterity
Witch, pure Intelligence
Mercenary, Strength and Dexterity
Monk, Dexterity and Intelligence

In the base roster, the "pure Intelligence" stat distribution and class archetype are used twice, whereas there is no Intelligence and Strength combination. With six classes missing, if GGG decides to release them one or two at a time, it's very likely that the next one will indeed be one of the Int/Str classes to fill that void. The final roster will include:

Sorceress, pure Intelligence
Witch, pure Intelligence
Druid, Intelligence and Strength
Templar, Intelligence and Strength
Warrior, pure Strength
Marauder, pure Strength
Mercenary, Strength and Dexterity
Duelist, Strength and Dexterity
Huntress, pure Dexterity
Ranger, pure Dexterity
Monk, Dexterity and Intelligence
Shadow, Dexterity and Intelligence

Why POE 2 is Likely to Add Druid or Templar Next

What follows is that, with Int/Str missing, it would make the most sense for either the Druid or the Templar to be released next. There is an argument to be made for this class to be PoE 2's Templar to beat Diablo 4 to the punch since it is still missing the Paladin/Crusader archetype. Likewise, the counterargument would be that adding the Druid could highlight the differences between each game's version, possibly inducing both Blizzard and GGG to make changes for the better in their ARPGs.

It is still possible for the next class or classes to be any other than Druid or Templar, but including one of these two would be refreshing from a starting-point perspective and it would possibly add more options for existing playstyles that are not fleshed out just yet. For example, it would be likely for the Druid to have at least some form of Totem skills, and seeing how this is an underexplored part of the game, it would make sense to add more to it. Likewise, Path of Exile 2's Infernalist and minion builds are about making these creatures more powerful, and the Templar could have an Ascendancy dedicated to buffing allies like in PoE 1. Only time will tell which class is next, but Druid and Templar would make the most sense.
